2015 Angus Journal Internship
Approximate 10-week internship working with the editorial team
Real-world experience.
This internship is fast-paced and industry-focused, offering an aspiring journalist the opportunity to gain real-world experience and build a stronger portfolio. It will be writing-intensive and offer the potential candidate the opportunity to participate in producing material for various information distribution vehicles, including the Angus Journal, the Angus Beef Bulletin, Angus Journal Daily, Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA and editorial websites. While we have the flexibility to tailor the internship to the strengths and needs of the intern, the basic template for the internship is as follows.
Attend two of the following …
• Beef Leaders Institute, June
• American Society of Animal Science Meetings
• NCBA Summer Conference
• Cattlemen’s Boot Camp as available
• Educational meeting of the intern’s choice per approval of the editor
• National Junior Angus Show
• Beef Improvement Federation symposium
Involved in production of …
• July, August and September Angus Journal
• September Angus Beef Bulletin
• June, July & August ABB EXTRAs
• Angus Journal Daily
Intern can expect to …
• Conduct three producer interviews
• Write at least one each of the following (these categories correspond to the ACT Critique & Contest and would give the intern a potential entry in each writing category):
- News Story
- Short feature story
- Long feature story
- Personality Profile
- Personality Profile
- Research article
- Research summary
- Optional: Photo Series
• Learn the magazine production process for two distinctly different magazines (Angus Journal and Angus Beef Bulletin)
• Participate in the editorial planning process
• Assist in the daily gathering, compiling, proofing that feeds our information outlets
• Learn the production process for an eZine (Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA)
• Take responsibility for managing a column or two for the summer (likely “Vet Call” and “Outside the Box”)
• Assist in maintenance and potential expansion of topic sites and API Virtual Library
• Ttake responsibility for Angus Journal Daily for a period of time
Be part of history:
• With the Association’s communications functions under the API roof, this may open opportunity for some additional exposure to new media technology.
