AgriLife Extension sets third Sandhills Cattlemen’s Conference

CRANE – The third annual Sandhills Cattlemen’s Conference has been set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. April 11at the Crane County Exhibition Building, 900 W. 6th St. in Crane.

The multi-county event conducted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will include Crane, Ward, Ector, Winkler and Loving counties.

“It’s been several years since we’ve conducted a multi-county program in Crane, so we are looking forward to hosting our neighbors from across the Sandhills area for this major educational event,” said Lyndi Bryant, AgriLife Extension agent in Crane County.

Topics and speakers will include:

— Follow-up Applications on Mesquite after Aerial Spraying or Mechanical Control, Katie Parrish, Dow AgroSciences representative, Lubbock.

“This year’s conference is going to emphasize mesquite control,” said Dena Floyd, AgriLife Extension agent for Winkler and Loving counties. “Since implementing a mesquite control plan can be very costly and time consuming, we’ve asked Katie to share some options on products to provide producers with the latest and most accurate information available so their time and dollars are invested efficiently.”

— Prescribed Fire Applications for the Permian Basin and Honey Mesquite versus Torreyana Mesquite: Identification and Treatment, Dr. Morgan Russell, AgriLife Extension range specialist at San Angelo.

“Dr. Russell will speak on prescribed fire because many producers have expressed an interest in this range management tool in recent years, but our region’s oil and gas infrastructure has prohibited its implementation for the most part,” said Caleb Eaton, AgriLife Extension agent in Ward County. “We’ve asked her to share some ideas on how ranchers might add prescribed fire to their resource toolbox here in the ‘Oil Patch.’ If weather permits, she plans on giving a small on-site demonstration to show some of the basic procedures.”

— Cow Size and Efficiency: Replacement Considerations, Bryant.

“Now that cattle prices have moderated considerably, many producers are interested in finally restocking their herds,” said Steve Paz, AgriLife Extension agent in Ector County. “Lyndi’s presentation will give producers some good pointers on selecting replacement stock to match their ranch operations.”

Individual registration is $30 due upon arrival. The fee includes lunch. For more information and to RSVP, contact Bryant at 432-558-3522 or email her at lyndi.bryant@ag.tamu.edu by April 6.

Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units, two general and one integrated pest management, will be offered.

More information is also available from any of the other cooperating AgriLife Extension agents. Contact them at: Eaton, 432-943-2682; Floyd, 432-586-2594; or Paz at 43-498-4071.
