SAV Emblynette 5368 to Sell
as 2016 Angus Foundation Heifer

The Angus Foundation is proud to announce Schaff Angus Valley, Saint Anthony, N.D., as the donor of the Angus Foundation Heifer Package to be auctioned off at the 2016 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo. Proceeds from the sale of this female benefit the Angus Foundation’s mission to support education, youth and research.

The chosen female, SAV Emblynette 5368 (AAA Registration No. 18141862), is true foundation material and has been selected for her individual quality and maternal excellence. Stacking the time-tested Emblynette family on both sides of her pedigree, she is fortified with ten generations of a prolific cow family that was established at SAV in 1946. She is the one-of-a-kind natural daughter of the elite fifth-generation Pathfinder, SAV Emblynette 5483, who records a weaning ratio of 104 on seven calves and has earned a stellar production record, while her Pathfinder grandam remains productive in the SAV program at 18 years of age.

“It is a pleasure and honor to contribute to the great work of the Angus Foundation that supports the Angus breed,” says Kelly Schaff. “Angus has been, and continues to be, the sole livelihood of our family.”

Avoid Summer Pasture Slump

Fresh, green pastures as the summer months approach can be a welcome sight for many cattle producers, especially after feeding costly forages throughout the winter. Yet just as quickly as that green grass comes, the pasture quality can diminish, leaving both pasture and cows nutrient-deficient.

These potential nutrient deficiencies come at a critical time when the cow likely has a calf at side and is either on target for rebreeding or is already rebred and trying to grow her developing calf. The nutrient requirements are high during this period, but there are a few ways to prepare for a decline in pasture quality.

“Producers may see cows slip in body condition score throughout the summer,” says Kelly Sanders, cattle nutritionist for Purina Animal Nutrition. “Forages mature as the summer goes on, losing nutrients, specifically protein, and allowing cows to lose body condition.”

California Angus Genomics Forum

The California Angus Association and the American Angus Association will co-host a one-day genomics forum Aug. 4 at Modesto Junior College, Modesto, Calif. The session begins at 11 a.m. Pacific daylight time (PDT) and is open to all cattlemen.

“We’re looking forward to bringing Angus breeders and commercial cattlemen together for this forum that explores genomic technology and how producers can use DNA testing in their operations,” says Terry Cotton, American Angus Association vice president of sales and regional manager in California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.

Dan Moser, president of Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI), and Tonya Amen, genetic service director, will address genetic selection. Topics include a review of the basics, focusing on expected progeny differences (EPDs) and dollar value indexes ($Values); and genomic tools for seedstock selection, including use of high-density genomic profiles. Speakers will also discuss the expanding line of genomic products commercially available to cattlemen and how they can best be used in genetic selection.

There is no fee to attend the genomics forum, and lunch will be provided.

‘Shark Tank’ Investor Barbara Corcoran
to Address 97th AFBF Annual Convention

Acclaimed real estate mogul and Shark Tank investor Barbara Corcoran will give the closing session keynote address at the 97th American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Annual Convention and IDEAg Trade Show in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 11, 2016.

Nearly 7,000 Farm Bureau members from across the nation are expected to gather in Orlando Jan. 10-13 to hear from distinguished leaders and participate in a grassroots policy-setting process that will guide AFBF through 2016.

Corcoran, one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the country, turned a $1,000 loan into a $5 billion real estate business. She is currently an investor on ABC’s No. 1 show on Friday night, Shark Tank, and has helped more than 30 entrepreneurs succeed in their respective industries.

“We are excited to have Barbara Corcoran as one of our keynote speakers,” said AFBF President Bob Stallman. “American Farm Bureau is extremely supportive of rural entrepreneurs. Providing our members the opportunity to learn from one of the most successful businesswomen in the nation is a great fit with our Farm Bureau Rural Entrepreneurship Challenge.”
