North American Championship
Rodeo Scheduled for Nov. 13,
14 and 15 at NAILE

North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) officials have announced that the 36th Annual North American Championship Rodeo will be in conjunction with the expo on Nov. 13, 14 and 15 at 7:30 pm EST each evening. The Expo and Rodeo take place at the Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC) in Louisville, Ky.

Tickets go on sale to the public Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. and are available at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 800-745-3000 or in person at the KEC and KICC Ticket Offices.

The Friday, Nov. 14, performance is “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night at the Rodeo. A portion of that evening’s ticket proceeds will be donated to Horses and Hope, a Kentucky charity dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. Rodeo fans and contestants are invited to wear pink to show their support.

The Rodeo is the invitational finals for the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Great Lakes Circuit. Top cowboys and cowgirls compete for more than $85,000 in prizes and the title of Regional Champion. Contestants earn their way to the Ram National Circuit Finals by competing in a nine-state region, including Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The 41st Annual NAILE is produced by the Commonwealth of Kentucky at the KEC under the direction of the Kentucky State Fair Board. The event features shows and sales for dairy cattle, dairy goats, llamas and alpacas, swine, beef cattle, sheep, quarter horses, draft horses, and meat-type goats.

Beckham Transitions to Full-Time Director of Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases

Tammy Beckham, who has been director of the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory since 2008, transitioned into a full-time role as director of the Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases (IIAD), effective Sept. 3.

Leadership of the Institute was added to Beckham’s duties in 2010. The Institute and diagnostic lab are part of Texas A&M AgriLife, headquartered in College Station.

The Institute was founded in 2004 as a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Center of Excellence. It focuses on research, education and outreach to prevent, detect, mitigate and recover from transboundary, emerging and/or zoonotic diseases, which may be introduced intentionally or through natural processes.

Under her direction, the Institute implemented a leadership strategy modeled by other DHS Centers of Excellence. Her guidance has resulted in new partnerships, an increased focus on technology transition and recognition of IIAD as a collaborating center in the specialty of biological threat reduction for the World Organization for Animal Health.

Beef Bash 2014 set for Sept. 25

The University of Kentucky (UK) College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association (KCA) will host the fourth biennial Beef Bash, a unique field day for Kentucky beef cattle producers, on Sept. 25 at the UK Research and Education Center at Princeton, Ky.

“Research and outreach efforts such as Beef Bash are an important means of providing up-to-date information to cattle producers,” said Roy Burris, UK Ag extension beef specialist. “We also are keenly aware of the importance of the social and business aspects of cattle production.”

Demonstrations and educational exhibits will focus on beef markets, minerals, hay storage, feedlot performance, genetics, pasture management, grazing and free Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training and certification.

“This field day is a good opportunity to learn more about the current issues we are facing in the beef industry and to talk with fellow cattlemen about the beef industry,” said Dave Maples, KCA executive vice president.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. CST, and programs and tours start at 9 a.m. A meal will be available for purchase. No pre-registration is required. The noon program features Nancy Cox, dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and John Paterson, executive director of producer education for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA).

For more information, contact Blair Knight at 270-365-7541, ext. 297 or blair.knight@uky.edu or contact a local UK Cooperative Extension Service office. You may also visit www.facebook.com/KyBeefIRM.
