Kansas Angus Field Day is Oct. 2 at R&L Angus, Westmoreland

Angus breeders, beef producers and friends, it’s time to plan a day trip just north of Manhattan to the annual Kansas Angus Field Day. The Kansas Angus Association and R&L Angus are excited to be your hosts for a day of Angus cattle, networking and educational presentations on Oct. 2, 2010. Registration is set to begin at 10 a.m., and activities will start with cattle displays by R&L Angus and area breeders including Blythe Angus, White City; Good Farms Angus, Olsburg; and Meadowmere Angus, Westmoreland.

Ron and Lynne Hinrichsen and their children, Cale and Eva, welcome you to R&L Angus and they proudly host the 2010 Kansas Angus Field Day. The Hinrichsen home and ranch is located 25 miles northeast of Manhattan, Kan. The ranch takes advantage of the outstanding grasses of the Flinthills. Established in 1991, R&L strives to produce Angus cattle with balanced maternal and carcass traits, while combining structural correctness, muscle and eye appeal. Maternal standards include mothering and milking ability, udder quality, disposition, fertility and efficiency. Sound, efficient, maternal-based cattle will always be the foundation R&L Angus is built on.

Ron serves on the board of directors of the Kansas Angus Association; Lynne is currently a regional director in the American Angus Auxiliary and past president of the Kansas Angus Auxiliary. Following a Certified Angus Beef® lunch, the afternoon program will include presentations by Allie Devine, vice president and general counsel, Kansas Livestock Association; Devine’s presentation is Proposed GIPSA Regulation: Impact on Beef Producers. Rick Pfortmiller, Igenity, will present Genomic Enhanced EPDs: Putting the Igenity Profile for Angus to Use in Your Operation. Gary Fike, Certified Angus Beef LLC, will expound on the topic, Certified Angus Beef: Breaking all Records —Where do we go now? Activities for children are planned during the presentations. The program will wrap up with cowboy poetry by Geoff Dawson.

ICA Representatives to Travel to Washington, D.C.

With numerous emerging issues on the horizon such as appropriate antibiotic use in food animals, environmental regulations and matters to be considered in the next farm bill, including renewable fuels, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) will send a group of individuals to Washington, D.C., in mid-September. While visiting the Hill, ICA representatives will meet with Iowa’s Congressional delegation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to voice the concerns of more than 9,600 ICA members.
 

Kent Pruismann, ICA president; Ed Greiman, ICA NW regional vice president; Dave Petty, ICA past president; and Duane Gangwish, ICA CEO will represent the ICA. They will join other cattlemen’s groups from across the nation in Washington, attending the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Legislative Conference.

Free eXtension Webcast Sept. 17: Novel Approaches to Manure Application in No-till Farming

Incorporating manure with little disturbance to retain the benefits of no-till farming has been an area of considerable research in recent years. What have researchers learned? Producers, crop advisors, animal scientists and others can learn some novel approaches in the free Sept. 17 webcast from eXtension’s Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center.

Penn State agronomy professor Doug Beegle and Cornell University associate professor Quirine Ketterings will discuss what they’ve learned about the agronomic, economic and environmental effects of methods including shallow disk injectors, aerators, vertical tillage tools and a dry litter subsurfer.

The webcast is 2:30 p.m.–3:45 p.m. Eastern Time, Friday, Sept. 17. More information about the Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center, its webcasts and how to participate is available on the eXtension site.

TSCRA Fall Board Meeting

Cattle producers and friends are invited to Austin for the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) Fall Meeting, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2010, at the Omni Austin Hotel Downtown, in Austin, Texas.

This year’s meeting will feature discussions on relevant issues and policies to be finalized at the Fall Meeting. These working committee sessions will prove invaluable to all members with concerns about issues of importance to cattlemen.

A welcome reception will kick-off the meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

TSCRA committees will meet Thursday, September 30. The day will conclude with a special evening event at The Austin Club where attendees will be able to mingle with legislative and agency leaders.

The TSCRA board of directors will meet Friday morning, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m.– noon. Our special guest speaker will be the Honorable David Dewhurst, lieutenant governor of the state of Texas. Dewhurst will be discussing the upcoming Texas legislative session.

The TSCRA group rate is $134 per night. This rate is also available three days before and after the event to allow families to take advantage of local entertainment options.

All meetings will take place on the hotel grounds.

Full meeting registration includes the Welcome Reception, lunch on Thursday, and all meeting breaks. The TSCRA Capitol Reception at The Austin Club is a separate event and is not included in the meeting registration. Additional tickets for the Welcome Reception and Thursday lunch may be purchased separately.

After Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, all TSCRA Fall Meeting registrations must be completed through on-site registration.
