Beef Production Day Set for Jan. 20

North Dakota State University’s North Central Research Extension Center near Minot is hosting a 2009 Beef Production Day at the center Jan. 20. The event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Speakers and their topics are:

  • Farm bill concerns for the cattleman – Grant Buck, Farm Service Agency, Minot
  • Using precipitation insurance to protect range and pasture – Becky Braaten, Farm Credit Services, Bottineau
  • Rising cost of production and price outlook for 2009 – Tim Petry, NDSU livestock marketing economist
  • Using corn byproducts to stretch feed supplies – Greg Lardy, NDSU beef cattle specialist
  • Plan now for late-fall grazing – Kevin Sedivec, NDSU range management specialist
  • What beef producers can do to attract calf buyers – regional market operators and calf buyers

The program also will include a free beef supper and beef hoop barn presentation. A representative from Hoop Beef System, Vermillion, S.D., will explain how hoop barns are being used for confinement cattle feeding in the Midwest and northern Great Plains.

The event is free of charge and no registration is necessary. The North Central Research Extension Center is a mile south of Minot on U.S. Highway 83. For more information, contact John Dhuyvetter, area livestock specialist at the center, at 701-857-7682.

The Titleist Group of Plain City, Ohio, and Express Angus Ranches of Yukon, Okla., won grand champion bull honors at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) Super Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show today. EXAR Titlelist T011 is a January 2007 son of BR Midland. Reserve champion bull honors were claimed by CJ Prestige 25T. The January 2007 son of HSAF Bando 1961 is owned by Dorrell Farms, Martinsville, Ind.; Wilson Cattle Co., Cloverdale, Ind.; and Cagwin & Johnston, Virginia, Ill. In other NWSS news, Canyon Creek Ranch of Cody, Wyo., purchased the Angus Foundation Heifer Package last night for $92,500. Chris McCutchen, owner of Limestone LLC, Perkins, Okla., donated the 2009 Angus Foundation Heifer, Limestone Rita T754. She is a daughter of the featured Limestone LLC and Express Ranches sire Raven. Her dam, Rita R379, is a direct daughter of Prime Time 2409. In addition to the heifer, Canyon Creek received 30 days of free insurance from American Live Stock Insurance Co., Geneva, Ill.; free transportation to the buyer’s ranch provided by Lathrop Livestock Transportation, Dundee, Ill.; and an Advanced Reproductive Technology Package from Trans Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, Iowa.

Brett Parr, Peoria, Ill., was named the Herdsman of the Year.

Agriculture Committee Chair Peterson Announces Agriculture Committee Members

Agriculture Committee Chair Collin Peterson of Minnesota announced late yesterday the members of Congress selected to serve on the House Agriculture Committee for the 111th Congress.

“The Agriculture Committee is responsible for issues as varied as farm programs, commodity markets, nutrition, conservation, renewable energy, and rural development, so the diverse experiences of these members will bring new ideas and energy to our work on these important issues,” Peterson said.

The 28 Democrats, including 11 freshman and 17 returning members, who will serve on the committee are:
