Banned U.S. Beef Shipped to Japan

A computer programming mistake at a U.S. meat-processing facility sent 1.3 tons of banned U.S. beef to Japan — beef that may have already been sold to consumers, Japanese officials reported late Jan. 12

The beef from 21-month-old cattle, which exceeds Japan’s allowable cattle age-limit, was processed at Moyer Packing Co. of Smithfield Beef Group, Reuters reports.

According to Reuters, Japan has suspended beef imports from the facility and ordered two Japanese importers to recall the product.

U.S. Negotiators Face New S. Korean Government

South Korea’s upcoming political shift will likely have an effect on ongoing negotiations between the country’s policymakers and U.S. beef officials.

The country’s current administration will transition late next month to one led by incoming Lee Myung-bak, The Korea Times reports.

According to an online article, future negotiations are unlikely to go smoothly. Lee’s transition committee is undecided and a major political election campaign is on the horizon, with general elections set for April.
