American Angus Association to Conduct Business at 124th Annual Meeting

American Angus Association members will meet during the 2007 North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), Nov. 10-13 in Louisville, Ky. A full slate of educational and social activities is planned for attendees to the American Angus Association’s 124th Annual Convention of Delegates and the 2007 Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show. Several new activities and a change of venue at the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center (KFEC) for the meetings are planned this year.

Registration for the event will begin Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Executive West Hotel, and will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration will also be available Sunday, Nov. 11 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Monday, Nov. 12 from 7 to 10 a.m. All delegates and Angus guests can pick up their name badges, show passes and purchase banquet tickets at the registration desk.

The Angus Foundation will host its 2008 Supporter Recognition Event on Saturday evening starting at 6 p.m. at the Executive West Hotel. The recognition event is by invitation to those who have contributed $250 or more to the Angus Foundation during this fiscal year.

Numerous activities occur on Sunday, including the junior Angus heifer show in Freedom Hall. Please check at the Angus registration desk or with show personnel for the order of breeds to be shown.

This year the Association and its entities will conduct educational seminars during the day at its new meeting location in the KFEC South Wing C — upper level. The Angus seminars will take place Sunday morning and Sunday after the educational program; Monday morning and after the Annual Meeting; and Tuesday morning. Watch the Angus web site and the hotel lobby for specific times and topics.

In addition, the American Angus Auxiliary will conduct its annual meeting, starting at 3 p.m., Saturday at the Executive West.

The American Angus Auxiliary will host its annual breakfast at the Executive West at 8 a.m., on Sunday. Tickets for the breakfast are $15, and can be purchased by contacting Sandra McCurry at 316-304-5973 or by e-mail at sandyehill@dtnspeed.net.

Later that day, the American Angus Association Board of Directors will present a breeders’ educational program that will begin at 1 p.m. in the KFEC South Wing C – Rooms 202-204. Immediately following the educational program will be the open meeting for Association Board candidates and delegates. Each of the candidates will have the opportunity to introduce themselves to the members present, and delegates are encouraged to ask questions of the candidates.

Sunday’s activities wind down at the Executive West. The Angus Reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

On Monday, Nov. 12, the Super-Point ROV Angus Show will begin at 8 a.m. in Freedom Hall. Quintin Smith, Lebanon, Tenn., is evaluating the cattle. Bulls and cow-calf pairs will show on Monday. The 2008 Miss American Angus will be chosen from a group of five candidates selected by the American Angus Auxiliary prior to the selection of the champion bull.

The Annual Convention of Delegates will begin 30 minutes earlier than in the past, at 1:30 p.m., that afternoon in the KFEC South Wing C — Rooms 202-204. President Jot Hartley, Vinita, Okla., will preside over the meeting. A total of 407 delegates from 46 states, the District of Columbia and Canada will conduct the business of the Association, including electing officers and five directors. The day will conclude with a social hour at 6 p.m. followed by the Angus Banquet at 7 p.m., at the Executive West.

This year’s banquet will feature Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) product sponsored by U.S. Premium Beef. Red Steagall, cowboy poet and singer will provide entertainment at the banquet. Inductees into the Angus Heritage Foundation will be honored, and the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Outstanding Leadership Award winner also will be recognized during the banquet.

The 2007 Super-Point ROV Angus female show will begin at 8 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Freedom Hall.

In addition to the scheduled events, the Angus Foundation, Auxiliary, and 2008 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) hosts will sell a variety of items in the Holiday Room at the Executive West.

Nebraska Angus Tour Set for Sept. 14-15

Two days of exciting events are planned for this year’s Nebraska Angus Tour, Sept. 14-15. With headquarters at the historic Bassett Lodge in Bassett, Neb., Angus enthusiasts will have the opportunity to explore Nebraska’s Sandhills and the Niobrara River Valley as they visit with local Angus breeders.

Friday’s events begin with a 7:30 a.m. departure from the Bassett Lodge. Tour attendees will first visit Hall Ranch to enjoy breakfast along the Niobrara River. From there, the tour travels to Barstow Angus, Springview Neb., before stopping for lunch at the Valentine Livestock Auction. Displays by Dailey Angus Ranch, Thedford, Neb.; Joseph’s Angus Ranch, Carter, S.D.; Kraye Angus Ranch, Mullen, Neb.; Diamond Lazy J Ranch, Nenzel, Neb.; and TK Angus Ranch, Gordon, Neb.; will be featured at this stop. Following lunch, the tour will visit Ainsworth Feed Yards to view Sears’ Angus cattle. Afternoon stops include a wind farm that can produce enough electricity for 19,000 homes and Hitchcock’s GBS Angus Ranch, Stuart, Neb. Friday’s events conclude at Darrel Smith Angus Ranch, Atkinson, Neb., for entertainment and a Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) dinner.

A 7a.m. departure is scheduled for Saturday, which features four ranch visits and an opportunity to cheer on the Huskers as they host the USC Trojans. Tour attendees will visit Bassett Feeding before heading to A&B Cattle, where attendees will enjoy breakfast before departing for the remaining tour stops. Three ranch visits, including Smith Angus Ranch, Bassett, Neb.; Mike Sitz Angus Ranch, Burwell, Neb.; and Fred’s Angus Ranch, Rose, Neb., will round out Saturday’s tour stops. Tour attendees are invited to the Elks Lodge of Ainsworth to enjoy a steak dinner while watching the UNL vs. USC football game.

Wyoming Angus Tour Set for Sept. 15-16

Sightseeing, fellowship, and recreation will make for an enjoyable experience during the Wyoming Angus Association’s “Towering Above the Rest” Angus Tour and Cowboy Golf Scramble set for Sept. 15-16. Angus enthusiasts are encouraged to attend this fun-filled weekend.

This year’s tour provides attendees the opportunity to visit three northeastern Wyoming ranches. The tour begins Saturday at Tower Valley Ag Supply, Hulett. An 8:30 a.m. departure for Ballou Angus Ranch will kick off the day’s ranch stops. This first stop includes registration, breakfast and a herd tour. From there, tour attendees will visit Neiman’s 77 Ranch for lunch and a herd tour. The final tour stop, Pannell Ranch, Alva, features a herd tour, social and dinner. A guest speaker and the Wyoming Junior Angus Auction will conclude the evening’s events.

In addition to participating in the tour, Angus enthusiasts are encouraged to take in the scenery while enjoying friendly competition at the 10th annual Pannell Ranch/Neiman’s 77 Ranch Cowboy Scramble Golf Tournament. The scramble will be at The Golf Club at Devils Tower, Hulett, Wyo. Those interested in participating in the golf scramble should contact Jim Pannell at 307-467-5712.

Cattlemen’s Boot Camps Planned for Pennsylvania, Kentucky

The American Angus Association and Angus Foundation will conduct two Cattlemen’s Boot Camps this fall. More are planned for winter and spring.

The Boot Camps will be hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), State College.

Boot Camps are two-day educational programs open to all cattle producers and cover all aspects of the beef industry from basic production practices to the end product. All participants must pre-register by the set deadline, and a minimal fee of $75 is charged to offset meals and materials.

“The American Angus Association and Angus Foundation appreciate the opportunity to partner with the universities to educate beef producers across the country,” says Jim Shirley, vice president of industry relations for the Association. “The Boot Camps offer an intense overview of beef production in a short amount of time.”

The University of Kentucky Boot Camp is set for Sept. 21-22 at the Fayette County Extension Center in Lexington. The Boot Camp begins at 12:30 p.m.

The Boot Camp at Penn State is Oct. 29-30 at the Beef/Sheep Unit on the Penn State Campus. The activities begin at 8 a.m., and the registration deadline is Oct. 1.

In Pennsylvania, a block of rooms has been reserved at the Holiday Inn Express, Williamsburg Square. Call 814-867-1800 and ask for the Cattlemen's Boot Camp block to get the block rate of $82 per night plus tax.
