Iowa Farms, Livestock Target of Violence

Reports of vandalism to farm equipment, buildings and livestock construction sites have been surfacing across rural Iowa, according to The Associated Press. Some farmers say they’ve received threatening phone calls and letters from people condemning the bigger-is-better approach to raising livestock.

According to AP, the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers has identified at least seven significant acts of violence and threats aimed at farmers since August. While most victims have been hog producers, cattlemen have also been victims, a coalition spokesman said.

Meat Supply Drops as Corn Prices Rise

The U.S. meat supply will fall by 1.7 pounds (lb.) per person this year as ethanol demand pushes corn prices to their highest level in a decade, Meatingplace.com reports.

According to the article, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates beef, pork and chicken will fall by 1 billion lb. Food prices, meanwhile, are expected to rise by 2.5% to 3.5% this year, according to the USDA forecast.
