USDA Identifies BSE Cow

June 30, 2005 — The animal that tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) last week has been identified as a 12-year-old cow, born and raised in Texas.

John Clifford, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) chief veterinarian, announced the results of the ongoing epidemiological investigation yesterday evening, marking the first case of BSE found in a native animal. Clifford said the cow — which, he reported, was identified by the owner as a Brahman-cross — was sent to a 3D/4D pet food plant, but was selected for sampling upon arrival at the Waco, Texas, facility. It did not enter the food or feed supply, he stressed. Its remains were incinerated.

The USDA has now put the source herd under a hold order as they identify other animals of interest, including any animals born the year before, the same year, or the year after the infected animal. Any of the BSE animal's offspring born within the last two years will also be investigated, Clifford said, although he noted that finding the neurological disease in more than one animal in a herd is "highly unusual."

The agency will also be working with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to determine the herd's feed history, and the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) will also play a crucial role in traceback efforts.

Further results of the investigation into the herd of origin will be announced as they become available. Visit www.usda.gov for more information.
