Country-of-Origin Labeling Delayed

May 18, 2005 — While writing a farm spending bill, members of the agriculture subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee voted Monday to prevent the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) from spending money this year to institute country-of-origin labeling (often referred to as COL or COOL) rules pertaining to meat, The Associated Press reported.

According to the article, the move could delay mandatory labeling plans for months after the intended September 2006 start date. It could also give the White House time to make another bid for a voluntary labeling system. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) has already introduced a bill that would repeal the mandatory system, replacing it with a voluntary one.

Monday’s vote will not affect labeling rules for fresh and frozen fish, which began carrying labels in April, AP reported.
