Johanns Named Ag Secretary

As Agriculture Secretary, Johanns, who was born in Iowa and raised on a dairy farm, will oversee the nation’s farm and food programs while tackling some of the industry’s toughest issues, such as foreign trade, animal health concerns and disaster assistance. A former lawyer and mayor of Lincoln, Neb., he served in county and city government before being elected governor in 1998 and again in 2002.

Veneman applauded Johanns’ appointment to the position.

"Governor Johanns brings tremendous strength to this position and will serve the President, this Department and American agriculture well during the next four years," she said in a statement issued following the announcement. "I have no doubt that he will continue the strong leadership tradition at USDA (the U.S. Department of Agriculture) and build on the many accomplishments this Administration has achieved during its first term."

Several industry organizations, including the National Farmers Union (NFU) and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), also voiced their support of the move.
