2004 Risk & Profit Conference and Trade Show
Aug. 19-20, Manhattan, Kan.
The theme of the 2004 Risk & Profit Conference will be "Advancing Ag Management with Economics." The event will be at the KSU Alumni Center in Manhattan and will focus on putting farmers and livestock producers in competitive positions by bringing them together with economic specialists in farm management, technology, marketing and policy issues.
Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman is scheduled to be the keynote speaker Aug. 19, and a trade show will feature agribusiness goods and services. Expected conference topics include the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and its effects 10 years later; consumer reaction to BSE; agritourism; cattle price grids and much more.
Conference participants may choose to attend up to eight sessions. The preregistration fee, which includes all sessions, four meals, a CD-ROM of proceedings and a parking permit, is $160, or $185 at the door. For more information visit www.agmanager.info/programs.

Kansas Angus Ass’n tour
Aug. 20-21, Flint Hills, Kan.
The annual two-day tour will begin at 6 p.m. at Mill Brae Ranch, Maple Hill, followed by dinner, entertainment and youth activities. Saturday’s activities will kick off with breakfast, presentations, and tours of Lyons Ranch near Manhattan, and Mill Creek Ranch, near Alma. Lunch will be provided, with presentations by industry representatives, including Jim Shirley, Association vice president of industry relations. Participants can attend afternoon breakout sessions and visit exhibits. MU field days

University of Missouri (MU) has released its 2004 field day schedule. Advancements in crop, livestock, horticultural and agroforestry research will be on display during the field days scheduled throughout Missouri. Feedlot MBA: Making Bottom-line Adjustments
Aug. 24, Mandan, N.D.
The one-day event, which will take place at the Best Western Seven Seas Inn and Conference Center in Mandan, includes such topics as mass medications, effective use of byproducts, trace mineral and vitamin nutrition, regulatory updates, management strategies to improve carcass quality, and more. A variety of industry representatives will make presentations during the conference, which is sponsored by North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA), North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension Service, NDSU Department of Animal and Range Sciences and Pfizer Animal Health. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and is set at $25 per person or $40 for two people from the same operation. A block of rooms has been reserved at the hotel until Aug. 10. A post-conference session, titled "Livestock Nutrient Management: A New Approach" is also scheduled for the following day, 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Aug. 25. Producing High-Quality-Grading Beef
Aug. 24-25, Benton, Quincy, Ill.
The two-day event will feature specialists from throughout the Midwest and is designed to educate cattlemen on how to produce a high-quality beef product. Topics will include marbling, early weaning, implant regimen and their subsequent effects on quality grade. The Beef Quality Audit (BQA), DNA technology and production costs will be discussed. Tuesday’s events will be at the Franklin County Farm Bureau Auditorium in Benton, and Wednesday’s activities will take place at the Adams County Extension office in Quincy. The conference is sponsored by University of Illinois (U of I) Extension, the Illinois Beef Association, the Illinois Soybean Association and Illinois Checkoff Board, the Illinois Corn Marketing Board and the Senator Simon E. Manure Science Review
Aub. 24, 25 & 26, Lima, Washington Court House & Wooster, Ohio
Manure management practices and application technology will be the focus of the event, which is sponsored by Ohio State University (OSU), the Ohio Livestock Coalition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), soil and water conservation districts, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), and the Farm Service Agency.
The program takes place Aug. 24 at Ohio State University in Lima; Aug. 25 at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in Washington Court House; and Aug. 26 at Fisher Auditorium at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster. The program will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and covers the same information at all three areas. Roundtable discussions will follow presentations, and a trade show will also be present.
Registration includes lunch and snacks in addition to the program and is $15 until Aug. 13. After that time, registration at the door will be $25. Admission for continuing education units is $30, or $40 on-site.

Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory 5th Annual Open House

The GSL fifth annual open house will include demonstrations on cattle and natural resource management, and exhibits and presentations from beef industry businesses, services and associations. Reproductive strategies conference
Sept. 1-2, North Platte, Neb.
The North Central Region Bovine Reproduction Task Force and a multistate Extension effort will sponsor the conference, titled "Applied Reproductive Strategies in Beef Cattle," at the Sandhills Convention Center in North Platte. The conference is meant to improve understanding of estrous cycles and estrus synchronization procedures, as well as male fertility and its affect on AI programs. NAAB annual convention and technical conference
Sept. 16-17, 17-18, Milwaukee, Wis.
The National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) 58th Annual Convention will be Sept. 16-17, and the 20th Biennial Technical Conference will be Sept. 17-18. The Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Milwaukee will serve as the headquarters for both events. The convention is expected to draw about 200-250 people, and will follow the same scheduling format as the 2002 event. A variety of speakers will present scientific developments and discuss important technical issues in artificial insemination (AI).
